They were who Enjolras fought for, because they were the people of France - they were Patria, and he loved them.

THIS POST MAKES ME SO HAPPY THAT I WANT TO SCREAM.

I know I should probably put this in the tags out of courtesy for the OP and their lovely brilliance but I literally cannot make myself do that because I am so happy right now. THIS POST. THIS. EXACTLY THIS.

I just… I feel like so many people misconstrue the whole “Enjolras is in love with France” thing, and it sort of becomes almost a joke in the fandom. I’m not begrudging anyone their fun, but I do feel that the result has been that a lot of people really don’t understand Enjolras and his love for France.

Enjolras isn’t in love with some abstract idea of country. His love for France is his love for FRANCE’S PEOPLE—- exactly what this gorgeous post is about. That (among many other reasons) is also why calling Enjolras cold and detached is completely invalid. He fights for France because he’s fighting for the people who live in it, and who make France the country it is—- or the country it should be. His entire motivation stems from wanting to improve the lives of the people who call France their home. He cares about each and every one of them, and that is why he does what he does, and fights for what he believes in. He’s not detached and cold; he’s right in the midst of things, and he’s on fire with passion and care for others. It’s not the “work” that matters as much as the people he’s working for. All of them, of all sorts, of all kinds. They all have value to him, and all of his actions are spurred on by the desire to help them—- both those whom we calls friends, and the thousands he never had the chance to meet. Enjolras is not about the abstract ideal of a country, which is how so many view him. His passion is much closer to home than that. At the core of everything, his focus and everything he stands for is driven by one thing: love for the people. It’s phenomenal, and beautiful, and complex, and morally good, and caring. And I really, really just wish everyone could remember that.
